In Valata itself there are mainly holiday properties, but also some permanently inhabited houses. There is a well-equipped doctor's surgery on the main road, the Valata valley station is home to a good restaurant and in the winter season there is a small but excellent branch of Menzli Sport right next to the lifts. The shop offers a wide range of winter sports equipment and all the equipment you could wish for is available for hire. In Affeier, about 2 kilometres from Valata, there is a Volg grocery shop, which also sells fresh baked goods. There is also a bakery and other restaurants. Larger shopping trips are recommended in Ilanz or in Chur, which can be easily reached by train from Ilanz railway station, for example.
